Name: Theresa Grojean (Sadly our angel Theresa passed away on 9th June,2001.)
Nick: Belle
Resides: San Antonio, TX, U.S.A
Diagnosed: September 1996
Age at diagnosis: 32
Diagnosis & Treatment: I was dx in 9/96. And had a bilateral mast with no lymph nodes involved, 10/21/96,the day after my 33rd birthday. We followed up with adjuvant fac for 6 treatments. 8/97, I felt tremendous pain in my hips, no over the counter pain reliever touched it. After tests, I found that I had metasteses in my bones. I looked like a dalmation on my scan. The dr. started my on fac for one treatment, it helped the pain in the hips - gone, but my left shoulder hurt. So we changed to Taxotere, I received 7 treatments of that, until we could convince the Drs. at the South Texas Cancer Institute that the cancer was responding to the chemo. Then after a battery of tests, I qualified for an autologous Bone Marrow transplant. That was March 5th, after that I was weak, in pain and unable to do a whole lot. The Dr. sent me to a Physical Therapist for 6 or 8 weeks with little help. Finally on Sept. 9th,1999, I needed to be put in the hospital for a blood transfusion ( my body wasn’t keeping up), my dr. conferred with the dr. at STCI and while I was in the hospital, they did a bone scan. More mets in my right shoulder this time and the Ct scan showed nodes on my liver. Today I go for my 12th weekly chemo of Herceptin and Taxol. But I feel great, and have felt great since the first chemo this time. I even bicycled in an eleven mile tour for toys for tots! and that was only after 3 weeks of chemo! 4/1/96- update I have now had about 26 weekly treatments of weekly Taxol and Herceptin. Feb.4th, I woke with Bell’s Palsy, Paralysis of one side of the face. The dr. sent me for a ct scan of the brain which showed sinusitis and an enlarged eustaniton tube putting pressure of a facial nerve. But the radiologist also saw background material, suggested an MRI, which showed 15 to 20 small nodes in my brain. I have gone through 15 radiations to the total brain and April 5th, wiil be 4 weeks since the last one so I am scheduled for a MRI then. I have also developed Lymphodema in my right arm But the dr. is concerned that I may have had too many steriods and my adrenal glands may have shut down. Blood test is due on Mon. 4/2 or 3. I am also wearing a compression sleeve and glove to keep the swelling down. Plus taking antibiotics and diuretics. That’s all for now.
